Re-embroidering Blackwork: unpicking the museum collection through contemporary art practice

In September 2018 I began my PhD as a Collaborative Doctoral Partnership student with Sheffield Hallam University and The Victoria & Albert Museum.

My research aims to:

  • Use art practices of making and re-making to investigate the historical Blackwork embroidery technique as a material, technical, cultural, and aesthetic practice.
  • Explore how contemporary art practice can be used as an interpretive technique in museums, especially when the original artefacts are fragile or inaccessible.
